Kununurra

This town is in ‘frontier country’, and Kununurra is the ideal gateway to some of Western Australia's most remarkable natural attractions. Although it is a relatively young town, it is situated in an ancient landscape; some of the rock formations in the area are believed to be 600 million years or older. In Aboriginal language, the name loosely translates to 'big water', which is a reference to Australia’s largest irrigation scheme: Lake Kununurra which is also a year-round playground for water sports enthusiasts. Nearby Lake Argyle is so vast it is rated as an inland sea; it is seven times the size of Sydney Harbour! A cruise on Ord River up to the massive dam that has created Lake Argyle, is a highlight when being in the region. Mirima National Park is also known as 'Hidden Valley,' it is only a short drive from town and it is packed with unusual rock formations in dramatic colours and shapes. Kununurra is for the ideal gateway for exciting Kimberley and North-West adventures – go on, discover it for yourself!
