It is the oldest city of Australia as it was here where the First Fleet, under the command of Arthur Philip, established the initial settlement at Sydney Cove in 1788. The first people who lived on the land approximately 50,000 and 70,000 years ago were the Ku-ring-gai, the Dharwal and the Dharug Aboriginal people. Although sharing some dialects and traditions, both groups have their own unique language, rituals and stories.
