Bungle Bungle Explorer

4 day Australia Trip » Kununurra to Kununurra

Overview
Start: Kununurra
Finish: Kununurra
Duration: 4 days
Total Distance: 600 km

Day 1 - Kununurra – Bungle Bungles [approximately 250 km]

Follow the Great Northern Highway southbound to Warmun [Turkey Creek], where there is a last opportunity to refuel and to maybe buy some refreshments. The 50 km track into the Bungle Bungles can be reasonably demanding as it is a relatively poorly maintained road. Slow and cautious driving is required, but there will be plenty to see along the way. Tonight, you will be putting up camp in a remote, but incredibly beautiful wilderness area. Enjoy good company of fellow explorers whilst you sit around the campfire.

Day 2 - Bungle Bungles [approximately 60 km]

Purnululu”, the Aboriginal name for the Bungle Bungle National Park, consists of two distinctly different parts; today, we recommend you visit the northern side of the park. Deeply carved gorges and towering walls dwarf visitors. It is particularly worthwhile to visit Mini Palms Gorge, whose base is covered with thick tropical vegetation and palm trees. Later in the afternoon, you will return to your campsite.

Day 3 - Bungle Bungles [approximately 40 km]

The southern part of the Bungle Bungle domes is made up of the often photographed ‘beehives that have made this part of the park famous the world over. The area is particularly attractive in the very early hours of the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is best for the keen photographer. A walk into the ever-impressive Cathedral Gorge and a detour to Piccaninny Creek is highly recommended.

Day 4 - Bungle Bungles – Kununurra [approximately 250 km]

After a leisurely breakfast around the campfire it is regrettably time to bid farewell to this terrific and stunningly beautiful wilderness area. The return journey on the only access track to the area leads back to the Great Northern Highway. From there, it will be an easy and comfortable drive to Kununurra where you will drop-off your rental vehicle late in the afternoon.
