New South Wales

What used to be an overseas province of the British monarchy, New South Wales was the first of the Australian states. It is a land of extremes: from snow-covered mountain peaks to endless desert and outback areas in the border region to South Australia and Queensland.  From cool climate pastures of the far south near Eden to the tropical fruit plantations near Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour, from the hustle and bustle of the country’s largest city – Sydney – to endless beaches and steep valleys in the World Heritage area of the Blue Mountains – New South Wales has it all! The state covers an area of more than 800,000 km2 and is home to one third of Australia’s population or approximately seven million. Sydney is home to some of the country’s most iconic man-made structures, such as Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and it is one of the world’s most stunning harbour cities.
