Mitchell Plateau

The rough track to Mitchell Plateau is definitely for 4WD vehicles only; the 50 km stretch of track takes half a day to navigate and it is slow and demanding going. There is a marked difference between the vegetation in the lower areas around King Edward River and the plateau, which is only 300 m higher than its surroundings. When climbing towards the plateau, one can enjoy beautiful vistas from numerous vantage points along the way. The plateau itself is a vast and densely overgrown wilderness of incredible beauty. Some excellent bushcamping opportunities are there as are impressive examples of well-preserved Aboriginal rock art. One of the most rewarding ways to discover the area is on foot as this will provide visitors with a slow and enjoyable discovery. The Mitchell Falls cascade over five levels and especially after a period of rain, the spectacle of thundering water is at its best.
