Tunnel Creek
Between Windjana Gorge and Geikie Gorge National Park (best accessible from Fitzroy Crossing on the Great Northern Highway) lies Tunnel Creek. In an area of the country known for its extreme heat and humidity during most months of the year, Tunnel Creek is a very special place as it offers visitors a cold, damp walk a path under a large limestone ridge. The 750 m tunnel is a dark place; a good and reliable torch is essential. In the middle of the tunnel though, there is a crevice through which sunlight streams through a hole in the roof of the cave. Tunnel Creek has been ‘opportunistic’ in taking the easiest path in its course along a fault line through slightly porous limestone; the cave was created over hundreds of thousands of years and visitors can take a walk through the timeline of its formations.
