Windjana Gorge

The stunning Windjana Gorge is a cleft through an ancient fossil reef, but Lennard River only flows through Windjana Gorge during the wet season (November to May), in the dry, it is a series of deep, cool pools at the bottom of sheer rockfaces and cliffs. These cliffs, with their deep groves between towering columns of limestone give the impression of organ pipes. Lush vegetation lines the banks of the river; on the higher ridges though there is barely any other plant than thick tussock grass that covers large parts of the mini-escarpment. Visitors have a very good chance to spot harmless freshwater crocodiles dozing on river banks and semi-submerged treetrunks. The 2,000 ha Windjana Gorge National Park is a paradise particularly for waterbirds like the stately jabiru or herons. The park is one of the most accessible areas for travellers to see Wandjina Rock art and their typical enigmatic faces from a long gone dreamtime.
