Bruny Island
Largely undeveloped, this beautiful island south of Hobart has retained its charming rural atmosphere. Bruny is a much loved retreat for many Tasmanians. The long, narrow island is pounded by waves of the Pacific on its Eastern side and is caressed by the much more gentle waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Bushwalking, fishing and exploring by car are some of the popular activities on Bruny, there is however a very interesting Aboriginal history attached to the Island, too. A prominent tribal leader, Truganini, is remembered with a memorial that lies between the northern and southern part of Bruny. The lighthouse at Cape Bruny is the second oldest in Australia, it dates back to 1836.
