Launceston
Despite being the second largest town in Tasmania, Launceston is a relaxed place. It lies in hilly countryside an in the scenically pleasing Tamar Valley towards the state’s north coast. Magnificent parks and gardens, many of them dating back to the 19th century, explain the nickname of “Tasmania’s Garden City”. Cataract Gorge is the city’s most spectacular natural attraction, it is a deep canyon carved into the surrounding granite escarpment over thousands of years. It is a popular walking area for locals and visitors alike. Penny Royal World is a 19th century replica of a settlement, complete with windmill, cornmill, tavern and museum. The city’s Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is said to be one of the best regional museums in Australia.
