Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is the main attraction in South Australia’s Flinders Chase National Park. Covering 80 km2, it is generally accessible via the narrow gap through which Wilpena Creek exits the pound. Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of mountains located 430 km north of Adelaide. It is a large basin-shaped structure, ringed by cliffs, made up mainly of the Pre-Cambrian age Rawnsley Quartzite. The Rawnsley Quartzite (in the Pound Subgroup) is made up of quartz-rich sediments ago that change colour according to the light that originally lay down in a large ocean. The structure was originally a huge dome pushed up by earth movements about 650 million years ago. There is plenty of wildlife in the park, in particular kangaroos and birds. The pound is also a very popular area for bushwalking, interesting to people of all levels of experience. Although it has a crater-like appearance, it is not a meteorite impact crater.
