Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is located 13 km off the South Australian coast. “KI”, as the island is referred to by locals, is one of the world's great unspoilt island wildernesses. Native Australian wildlife and nature abound, and many species of plants and animals that are found on Kangaroo Island are no longer seen on the mainland. The island was separated from mainland Australia by a rise in sea levels about 9,000 years ago. Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island, with much of it classified as national and conservation parks. The largest is Flinders Chase National Park in the west of KI, about 90 minutes by vehicle is the Flinders Chase National Park and visitors can see kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, platypus and possums. The spectacular coastline is made up of towering cliffs, beautiful sandy beaches, battered rocks and quiet secluded inlets. There are a number of very diverse bush walking and fishing opportunities on Kangaroo Island. Kingscote is the largest town and is situated on Nepean Bay. Here visitors can watch pelican feeding in the afternoon at the jetty, and see tiny fairy penguins come ashore at night.
