Arthur’s Pass
The pass is only 920 m high, but being surrounded by majestic peaks of the Southern Alps, it provides visitors with an alpine experience nevertheless. Arthur’s Pass marks part of the boundary between the Westland and Canterbury regions of the South Island; Christchurch is 140 km to its East and Greymouth is 95 km to its West. The pass is situated in a saddle between a set of river valleys. The township of the same name is located about 5 km south of the mountain pass. Picturesque valleys and ravines, thundering waterfalls and snow-capped mountain peaks define stunning Arthur's Pass. From hiking to fishing in the summer, to skiing and ice skating in the winter months, the national park offers year-round outdoor recreation.
