Devonport and the Far North
Tasmania's north coast offers tranquil landscape and coastal areas with many great places to visit along the
rocky and sandy coastline. There is also an abundance of history for the traveler and a little further inland there are pretty towns and plenty of rivers. The Bass Highway is the main route that runs along the north coast, allowing access to many places of interest along the way. Devonport is a coastal city of 25,000 people situated in the centre of
Tasmania's north coast. The city has had many names in the past, however it was decided in 1890 that Devonport, after the English town of the same name, would be final name. Situated at the mouth of the Mersey River which meets Bass Strait, Devonport is also the Tasmanian port for the “
Spirit of Tasmania” ferry service operating between the port of
Melbourne and Tasmania. Devonport is generally the major sea gateway to Tasmania.
