Port Arthur
Port Arthur is located on the Tasman Peninsula, approximately one and a half hours drive south-east of Hobart. The Port Arthur settlement ruins are the greatest historic tourist attraction in Tasmania with 40 ha and over 30 historic buildings, ruins and gardens, including fully restored and furnished houses. Self-guided and guided tours are available daily. Harbour cruises across to the Isle of the Dead – Burial place of the convicts, soldiers and civilians - are also possible. Gardens are at their splendid best from November to January. Visitors can also stroll through a Memorial Garden dedicated to the victims of the 1996 shooting tragedy, during which 35 innocent lifes were lost.
