The Rocks
The Rocks is one of the most visited spots in Sydney; nestled at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and on the western shores of Sydney Cove, The Rocks is the foundation place of Sydney and Australia, and of great historical significance for non-Aboriginal Australia. The Rocks was once home to the local Aboriginal Cadigal people. It is the location where the first European settlement was established in 1788. Since that time The Rocks has seen major transformation but it has always kept its village-like charm, character and rustic beauty. Today, it is a place where one finds boutique shops, fine dining restaurants or casual eateries and coffee shops. One can also visit one of the many museums and art galleries. Each weekend, a market is held where arts, craft and souvenirs – most created by the stallholders themselves – are on offer to the curious visitor. The Rocks are best explored on foot.
