Outback of New South Wales
The Outback of New South Wales is a region with beautiful landscape, dramatic scenery and plenty of interesting history. Art, culture and waterways are a few other things that can be found in places like Broken Hill, Lightning Ridge (Black Opals), Bourke, Cobar, Wentworth and Corner Country. The Darling River, which is the backbone of the region, provides important nutrition for nature and wildlife in the area and was at one point the inland highway going from Brewarrina to Wentworth. One of the most famous places in the NSW outback is Lake Mungo National Park; this ancient dry lake bed has revealed the remains of Mungo Man and Mungo Woman, whose ritual burial provides evidence of an age-old and complex Aboriginal culture. The earliest footprints in Australia – estimated to be more than 20,000 years old – were also discovered here. The national park has a weird lunar landscape and a result of its significance to mankind it is recognized as part of Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. Besides Mungo National Park there are five more national parks to be explored, each with its own unique fauna and flora.
