Capital Country
The Capital Country, named so because it is the area surrounding the nation’s capital Canberra, is close to Sydney and very accessible and easy to get around. It is one of the oldest established areas in Australia, with lots of heritage and colonial buildings, galleries and landscaped gardens. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn because in those seasons the gardens are at their best. A couple of towns are Braidwood, Goulburn, Yass and Young. These all offer scenic walks, caves, galleries or antique shops. It is also possible to taste a wide range of local produce like wines, smoked meats or fish, mustards and chutneys, quality cherries or enjoy Devonshire Tea. For the more active traveller there are many national parks to be explorer – eight of them in total, all with stunning views and various walking trails.
