Western McDonnell Ranges

On the western side of Alice Springs, just outside of town, the Western McDonnell Ranges begin. This is a 644 km long ridge of stunningly scenic gorges and steep red ridges. Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap, Glen Helen Gorge, Ormiston Gorge and Palm Valley are only a few of the many spots to visit, all within a few hours drive from Alice Springs. Within the ranges, on can find the West McDonnell National Park with the Larapinta Trail, a walking trail of about 220 km of tracks spread out over the whole park. And for a refreshing dip, Ellery Creek Big Hole and Redbank Gorge are just a few of the many locations where visitors can take a cool dip. The traditional owners of the land are the Arrernte people and they believe giant caterpillars, called Yerperenye, became the ranges that are the Western McDonnells.
