Litchfield National Park
Located 120 km south of Darwin and only a one and a half hour drive away along the Stuart Highway, Litchfield National Park is for a perfect daytrip from Darwin. The park covers 1,500 km2 pristine bush and savannahland and offers a wide variety of natural attractions and things to do. From November to May the park seems to be bursting at its seems, as this is the monsoon season and the many rockholes and waterfalls are filled with plenty of fresh, cool water. The Wagait people are the traditional owners of the park. There are many “must see” spots, such as Florence, Tolmer or Wangi Falls or Buley Rockhole. Quite possibly the most popular are the stunning Wangi Falls, it is an excellent spot for swimming and picnicking. It is a good idea not to swim during the wet season as there may be too much water and being close to the actual waterfall can be quite dangerous. Another intriguing sight are the many magnetic termite mounds in the northern part of the park. Those ‘needlelike’ termite mounds are positioned in an exact North-South direction as this guarantees the highest possible exposure to sunlight which in turn keeps the mounds at an even and ideal temperature level.
