Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park is located about 310 km from Alice Springs and about 300 km north of Uluru. It is accessible by both, conventional vehicles and 4WD’s, and the park is open year round; the best time to visit though is between April and October as daytime temperatures are more moderate than during the hot summer months. There are two walks around the canyon: one climbs to the top and provides visitors with excellent views and photo opportunities. This walk is for the fitter walkers as it is approximately 6 km long, includes a strenuous and steep initial climb and takes about three to four hours to complete. The other track leads to the base of the impressive gorge and the famous and richly beautiful “The Garden of Eden”. The base walk takes visitors to cool rock pools and provides close encounters with the fauna of the area; this easy walk takes about one hour to complete. In and around Kings Canyon travellers can find over 600 different plant species and numerous marsupials, such as kangaroos and rock wallabies. The Lurtja people are the traditional owners of the land and have been living in the area for over 20,000 years.
