Western Australia Wine Industry
Western Australia has a reasonably long history of wine making. Almost 200 years ago, in 1829, the first vine was planted in Olive Farm by Thomas Waters; the vineyard still exists today and is now Western Australia’s biggest wine produce, better know as Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley. The wine industry in WA has 9 individual wine regions, all located in the South West of the state: Swan District, Perth Hills, Peel, Geographe, Blackwood Valley, Margaret River, Pemberton, Manjimup and Great Southern. Most popular are Swan District and Margaret River, both of these region have other things on offer like gourmet restaurants, micro breweries, chocolate factories and luxurious accommodation for that weekend getaway. The Region is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, but of course others like Shiraz and Chardonnay are also grown and harvested with great success.
