Cape Leveque / Dampier Peninsula
The 200 km unsealed route from the pearling capital of Broome to the remote and sensationally beautiful Cape Leveque at the top end of Dampier Peninsula, traverses open eucalypt country and vast Aboriginal reserves. Within the reserve is a truly unique church, the Sacred Heart Church at Beagle Bay, with its magnificent pearl-shell altar leads visitors to believe that they have come to an island somewhere in the South Pacific – it seems a strange experience to find such delicate work in an unforgiving wilderness area of northern Australia. The Aboriginal community at Lombadina offers sightseeing, fishing and mudcrabbing tours. Cape Leveque is best known for its ochre-coloured rocks and a coastline dotted with vantage points from which visitors can watch unforgettable sunset over the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. The Cape is last frontier country; the road ends here and nature lovers find a true and unspoilt paradise at the tip of the peninsula.
