What once was a sleepy coastal village some 60 km north of Cairns is today a stylish, worldly and very wealthy holiday resort town. The town is surrounded by lush tropical rainforests and it is one of the best gateways for tourists to get to best snorkel and dive sites of the northern Great Barrier Reef. There is a “Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary” in town, it includes an area of more than two hectares and it is home to some 1,600 animals. Visitors can get up close and personal with animals of the rainforest, wetlands, woodlands and grasslands – North Queensland’s four habitats. Travellers can enjoy excellent views of Port Douglas and its splendid Four Mile Beach from Flagstaff Hill at the northern end of town.
