Hinchinbrook Island
A narrow and shallow channel separates the mainland from the largest island national park in Australia – Hinchinbrook Island. The island is home to a truly amazing variety of vegetation, including dense rainforest, wetlands, forests and woodlands. It is home to the second highest peak in Queensland. There are countless walking tracks, the longest being the 32 km Thorsborne Trail on the east coast; it is renowned for its spectacular scenery. Hikers must be self-sufficient, many visitors allow up to four days to complete and enjoy this magnificent walk. There is a low-key resort at the northern end of the island; regular ferry services from Cardwell exist.
