Mackay
The city of Mackay, located on the mid-northern Queensland's Pacific coast, offers a unique blend of 1900’s and art deco building mixed with modern-day architecture. Initially, Mackay was a centre for a large and thriving sugarcane industry in the late 1860’s; today it is a hub for tourism to the southern Whitsunday region. It also houses a big number of miners who work in the many mines three hours west of the city. The city is home to a unique art gallery, “Artspace Mackay” which is part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network. The local Queens Park is home to a vast orchid collection; over 3,000 different plants can be marveled at. The city’s botanical garden has a large lagoon a main focus point; a boardwalk leads visitors to tranquil corners of the public gardens.
