Lake Taupo
The magical Lake Taupo is located on the North Island. It has a circumference of almost 200 km, at its deepest point it measures 186 m and the surface is about 620 km2. Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the country and in the Southern Hemisphere. The lake and the towns on its shores are surrounded by beautiful volcanoes, mountains and stunning landscapes. Visitors to the area can enjoy excellent trout fishing; in fact one can find some of the best trout fishing in the world here! In winter it is an ideal place for skiing and in summer it is the place to be for adventure-minded people. Also in the region are a few geothermal areas with the best known of all being Huka Falls; here one can find steaming craters, geysers, some of the largest silica terraces in the world and boiling and bubbling mud pools.
