Remarkables Mountain Range

The Remarkables are a mountain range located on the south eastern shores of Lake Wakatipu on the South Island. The range derives its the name from its sharply rising rock faces and sheer walls and cliffs that create a truly awe-inspiring background for the scenic waters of Lake Wakatipu. They are unique in the sense that there are apparently only two mountain ranges in the world that run in an absolute north-to-south direction. The nearest major town is Queenstown and from here visitors to the region can clearly see the peaks of the mountain range. The highest peaks are Double Cone, 2,340 m, and Ben Nevis, 2,330 m. In winter The Remarkables become a truly remarkable skiing area. From late June to mid October, guests will enjoy soft, cold and dry snow for most of the season. Since opening in 1985, the ski fields have become known for an alpine environment, relaxed atmosphere and a great sense of fun.
