Interislander Ferry
The Interislander ferry passage is the cruise travellers take when visitors cross over from the North to the South Island or vice versa; it operates between the nation’s capital – Wellington – and Picton on the northern tip of the South Island. The trip is an enjoyable 92 km cruise that takes about three hours; the route leads, if leaving from Wellington, via Pencarrow Head into the stunningly beautiful Marlborough Sounds and the equally scenic Queen Charlotte Sound before finishing in Picton. There are three vessels currently operating the daily journey: “Arahua” can carry up to 1,000 passengers, “Aratere” is the smallest with a capacity of 350 passengers and “Kaitaki” can accommodate up to 1,600 guests. There is a total of eleven journeys per day to choose from. The cruise itself is a truly spectacular experience which is a highlight in every tour around New Zealand; there are stunning views to be enjoyed along the way. During high winds, the sea journey through narrow channel between the two islands can be a little comfortable than on a calm day, but passenger safety is always guaranteed.
