Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay or Heretaunga in Maori is located on the east coast of the North Island and is blessed with a Mediterranean-like climate. Over 2,200 hours of sunshine annually make it a popular holiday destination all year round. The region starts with the Ruahine and Kawkeke Ranges and slides into the beautiful green Heretaunga plains where visitors can find some of the many award winning wineries. This region is New Zealand’s oldest wine region and the red wines grown here have won various awards. Next to the food and wine one can also find a lot of culture and heritage; Napier and Hastings have many Art Deco and Spanish Mission architecture as a result of both cities being rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1931. For those interested in Maori and a diverse range of historical facts, there are 17 heritage trails to be explored. For the more adventurous there is jet boating, cycling, paragliding from Te Mata Peak and surfing on some the stunning beaches. Birdwatchers can observe the world’s largest mainland gannet colony at Te Mata Peak.
