Te Anau

The town of Te Anau is located just two hours from Queenstown and is the gateway to the world-renowned Fjordland region (Milford and Doubtful Sounds). It is favourably situated at the edge of Lake Te Anau with Mount Luxmore in the background. Being only two and a half hours drive from Milford Sound, it is an ideal place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery or from which to take a scenic cruise or flight or enjoying fishing or kayaking. For those who are more active and adventurous, Te Anua is also known as the “walking capital of the world”. Fjordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks are part of the great southern walking tracks, better known as The Milford Track and The Keppler Track. There are also the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves - a rare example of a living cave that is still under formation.

Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and second only within New Zealand to Lake Taupo. Te Anau has the enviable reputation of being the “walking capital of the world”; the town is the ideal gateway for many of the brilliant walking tracks in the area. Other outdoor activities like fishing, boating, mountain biking, skiing and cross-country skiing in winter, scenic flights or visiting the stunning national parks around the lake are all readily available to visitors. Te Anau offers a wide range of different accommodation styles and its local restaurants and cafes offer a great variety of fresh and tasty food.
