Devil’s Marbles
Located 114 km south of Tennant Creek, the Devil’s Marbles or Karlu Karlu, are huge granite boulders scattered through a wide shallow valley. These rocks have been formed over millions of years by result of the hardening of magma within the earth’s crust, put sandstone on top and after many years of erosion the granite cracked and fell apart into the big blocks seen today. Local aboriginal people, the Kaytetye, believe that the boulders are the eggs of the rainbow serpent. The park is accessible all year and has various pathways through the site. One of the marbles was removed in 1953 to Alice Springs to serve as a memorial for John Flynn, founder of the Royal Flying Doctors, but after a lot of controversy the boulder was put back at its original place in the late 1990’s.
