Hole in the Rock
The 60 m high “Hole in the Rock” off Cape Brett, has been carved into a sheer rock face by the enormous forces of nature. Etched by wind and washed out by wave activity in the Bay of Islands, it has become a focal point for a number of day cruising activities in the region and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the North Island. Boat cruises may attempt to sail through the Hole in the Rock which is more like the eye of a needle, when the tides are right. The official name of the island is Piercy Island; it is more a barren rock in the ocean; being only a home to gannets and other sea birds in the bay. The island itself was named by Captain Cook in honour of one of the Lords of the Admiralty. The Māori name is Motukokako.
