Kalgoorlie
When in 1893 an Irishman called Paddy Hannan discovered gold in Kalgoorlie, it meant the start of one of Australia’s great gold rushes. Nowadays Kalgoorlie is a major resource centre for Australia’s giant mining industry. You can still find gold in the area, but in much smaller quantities. When you are there for a visit you can join a local tour and go and search for your own piece of fortune. Another major Australia attraction is the “Super Pit”, one of the largest open-cut mine sites in the world. Between 800,000 and 900,000 ounces of gold are produced every year. At the moment the Super Pit is approximately 3,5 km long, 1,5 km wide and 370 m deep - The pit is as deep as Ayers Rock is high! The gold fields are a popular selfdrive destination from Perth, it takes about six hours by car but one can also get there by air, coach or train.
